FAQ’s

How does it work?

Dermapen™ is the ultimate evolution of the old roller-type skin needling devices and the most advanced skin needling system available in Australia. The Dermapen 4 MD™ is a medical grade instrument incorporating a disposable head comprising 16 ultrafine micro-needles measuring up to 3mm in length and oscillating at 120 revolutions per second (which equates to almost 2000 small punctures every second!). That’s 50% more coverage than the Dermapen 3 every second.

The needles create tiny punctures in the skin surface causing micro-trauma and inducing an immune response and subsequently the creation of new healthy collagen which tightens and rejuvenates the skin, remodels scars and reduces pores. This micro-damage at the superficial level also evens out pigmentation.

Dermapen can also be used as a delivery system to carry topical nutrients and infusions used during treatment deep into the skin layers for an increased effect.

What is it used for?

Dermapen is an entry level form of non-laser fractional skin resurfacing.

In experienced hands it can be an effective treatment for reducing the appearance of:

  • Acne scars (early, mild to moderate scars)
  • Chicken pox scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin pigmentation
  • Sun-damaged, coarse skin
  • Large pore size

What is the difference between Dermapen 4 MD™ skin needling and fractional laser?

Dermapen is a mechanical device using micro-needles to produce tiny columns of damage in the skin. It is a mechanical method of producing fractional skin resurfacing.

Lasers use high intensity light energy to produce similar columns of micro damage in the skin.

The main differences are that:

  • Lasers produce controlled heating of the surrounding skin, inducing a greater degree of collagen stimulation and remodelling
  • Lasers are more accurate and precise in their effect. The depth, intensity and size of tissue damage can be varied and controlled to within one hundredth of a millimetre with a laser.

In short, lasers are a superior form of fractional skin resurfacing producing greater overall results, but Dermapen is more affordable and has less downtime.

Are there any benefits of Dermapen skin needling over fractionated laser?

Yes, cost!

Dermapen is an affordable, entry-level treatment for acne scars and other skin conditions.  The Dermapen machine is 200 times cheaper than a fractionated laser, and the treatments can be performed by a dermal therapist or nurse under medical supervision so they cost less. You will not get the same result compared to a Fraxel or CO2 laser treatment, but you will get improvement.

How is Dermapen skin needling performed?

You will have an initial consultation with our Dermal therapist, Nurse Fay or Dr Csilla. At this consultation we will assess your skin condition and determine the best treatment for you taking into consideration your budget and downtime requirements.

The area to be treated will be mapped and photographed, establishing a baseline and allowing us to assess response to treatment.

On the treatment day you will need to allow 75 – 90 minutes for the whole procedure, including the application of topical numbing cream.

The treatment takes 15-30 minutes to perform depending on the area to be treated. The patented Dermapen device is hand-held and glides over the skin producing more than 1300 tiny holes per second. Each of these holes produces collagen remodelling. The depth of the needles can be varied from 0.5 to 2.5mm of penetration depending on the type of scar or condition we are treating.

There is pinpoint bleeding, a little oozing and mild swelling of the treated skin following the procedure. This usually settles over the next day or so. There will be a little crust and scale for up to 3-4 days and the area will be pink-red for up to a week.

Is Dermapen skin needling painful?

Generally no. This is a relatively superficial treatment and we use a special numbing cream to further reduce discomfort. It is often described like feeling a firm coarse brush rubbed against your skin.

What is the “Vampire Facial”?

Vampire Facial is the combination of Dermapen needling and PRP therapy (platelet rich plasma). It has been made famous by several Hollywood celebrities who have undergone the procedure. Dr Csilla has been performing the “Vampire facial” for many years (even before it attracted celebrity status!).

PRP is extracted from your blood at the time of the treatment (just like a traditional blood test).  The blood is centrifuged in special glass vials, separating the platelet rich plasma from the blood cells and serum.

These concentrated platelets in the platelet rich plasma contain certain immune factors which result in a wound healing response to stimulate and promote new collagen production. When infused into the skin during Dermapen needling this enhances the overall effectiveness of the procedure.

How many treatments are required?

Dermapen is generally not a one-off treatment. Usually 5 or 6 treatments are required for effective results, with 4 weeks between each treatment. The process of collagen production and remodelling continues for more than 3 months after the treatments.

Dermapen treatments can be purchased individually or in economical packages of 3 or 6 treatments. Call us on (07) 3214 1400 for more information on pricing.

What results can I expect?

The majority of patients will see modest results (eg. 30-40% improvement in acne scars) after several treatments. The number of treatments required depends on the results you are looking for. Collagen remodelling takes 3-4 months, so the results are best assessed at 3 months after the final treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Redness occurs and will settle after 2 – 7 days.

Swelling is usually minor and settles after a few days.

Weeping or oozing may occur in the first 24 hours.

Acne breakout may occur after the procedure, and Cold sores may be uncommonly triggered if there is a past history.

Milia (small white superficial cysts) may occur after treatment but are easily treated.

Bacterial infection and Scarring are very uncommon
