What Are Nasolabial Folds?

Nasolabial folds are the deep lines that form between your nose and your mouth. They run from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth. These folds are often called “laugh lines” or “smile lines”. Everyone has them and some people would prefer them to be less prominent.

As we age, the structure of our cheek area flattens out due to volume loss, which can cause the skin on the cheeks to droop downwards or sag. A large weight loss can also cause deepening of the nasolabial folds as weight loss often leads to looser skin particularly in the face and neck. Sun damage and smoking are also thought to increase the chance of developing deeper folds.

Can Nasolabial Folds Be Prevented?

Completely preventing any appearance of nasolabial folds as we age may not be achievable but we can definitely take steps to prevent them from deepening. We recommend the following:

  • Sun protection – it’s important to wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun as much as possible. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun break down the collagen and elastin fibers in your skin. Collagen and elastin keep your skin smooth and supported.
  • Avoid cigarettes – smoking breaks down collagen and elastin fibers
  • Use antioxidant skin care products – Skincare products containing antioxidants such as vitamin C may help to protect the collagen and elastin in your skin. Products containing retinol have been shown to increase skin cell production which leads to more youthful looking skin. (If you are using products containing retinol, it is important to also wear sunscreen and use moisturiser)

What Is The Best Treatment In Brisbane For Nasolabial Folds?

There are a number of options to treat nasolabial folds including:

  • Face lift or cosmetic surgery
  • Skin tightening using fraxel laser or ultrasound
  • Dermal fillers

Although surgery is an option for some clients, we offer less invasive procedures to help our clients look and feel better about their “laugh lines”. Compared to cosmetic surgery nonsurgical procedures have less downtime and fewer risks and complications such as infection and scarring. A combination of non-surgical skin tightening and dermal fillers produces excellent results for most clients with very little downtime and close to no risk.

Dermal Fillers To Treat Nasolabial Folds In Brisbane

Fillers are often a good first step toward reducing the severity of nasolabial folds. The injected filler adds volume to the midface area to soften the lines and give you a fresher appearance. This treatment will restore your facial contours to how they appeared years ago, giving you an immediately more youthful appearance.

Natural Looking Nasolabial Fold Treatments Across Brisbane

In our Brisbane clinic we understand that a whole face approach to your treatments will result in a more natural, youthful look, rather than using isolated treatments in a particular area. Refreshing the mid section of the face with dermal fillers, which often includes also treating your under eye hollows, rebuilding your cheekbones and lifting drooping fat pads will retract your nasolabial folds and smooth the entire mid face area, greatly reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
