thread lift and Non Surgical facelift

At Brisbane’s Elysium Skin Centre we offer multiple treatment methods to firm and tighten skin, reduce sagging, and treat lines and wrinkles. Thread lift (otherwise known as soft face lift, silhouette lift, Korean threads, PDO threads etc) is a proven non-surgical method to subtly tighten and rejuvenate sagging skin on the face, jawline and neck. It can be used alone or in combination with fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, laser and ultherapy to significantly improve the result you are looking for. At Elysium we offer both Mint® and Silhouette® threads depending on your clinical assessment.

It is important to note that threads are not intended to achieve the same result as a full surgical facelift. The results are visible but gentle and the procedure is ideal for those wanting an improvement without the expense, downtime and risks associated with invasive facelift surgery.

What are threads?

Threads are thin absorbable filaments which are inserted under your skin to provide support and lift. They are inserted using a fine needle and no incision is required. Modern threads have small barbs or cones to provide greater lifting traction, are absorbable and stimulate collagen production for a longer lasting effect.

Thread Lift FAQ’S

How is a thread lift performed and how does it work?

The concept is simple and efficient, and the procedure is quick and well tolerated.

You will first be assessed by Cosmetic Physician, Dr Hugo. He will go through the procedure with you, ensure that it is suitable for you, discuss any complications and aftercare, provide an accurate quote of costs, and discuss any other procedures that might benefit the overall effect you are looking for.

At the time of the procedure several small injections of local anaesthetic are used to numb the insertion points and minimise any discomfort. The threads are then inserted under the skin using a fine needle. No incisions are made. After being inserted into place, the cones or barbs on the thread bind to the skin and deeper tissue resulting in traction. The tissue is then compressed and the thread gently pulled to produce the desired lift. The thread is anchored at a higher level.

The thread provides an immediate visible lift to the skin. Over time the thread stimulates production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin producing a longer lasting structural framework. The thread itself is absorbed and disappears over about 9 months.

Is there any downtime?

In most cases, you are able to return to normal daily activities the day after your procedure. There are no visible scars as a result of a thread lift, however, you may experience some redness, swelling and bruising after the procedure which will subside within 48 hours. Bruising and redness can be concealed with makeup.

How long does a thread lift last?

The effects of a thread lift usually last for about 18 months but this does vary (12-24 months) depending on the individual. Use of fillers and anti-wrinkle injections will enhance the result and may prolong the effect.

What is the difference between Silhouette® and Mint® threads?

Both Silhouette and Mint threads are high quality sterile absorbable sutures with specially designed profiles to provide traction and lift the skin.

Silhouette threads are manufactured in the USA from Polylactic acid (PLA) and incorporate patented bidirectional cones (or “cogs”) on the thread to produce skin traction. They cost about twice as much (per suture) as Mint threads but are longer and require fewer to achieve a similar result.

MINT stands for Minimally Invasive Nonsurgical Thread and is produced in Korea from Polydioxanone (PDO). It uses moulded barbs arranged in a patented bidirectional 3D helical array providing very strong traction and lift. It is shorter than the Silhouette suture, but is also less expensive and does have a very high degree of traction and tensile strength. Because they are shorter, more Mint sutures are required to lift a given area than Silhouette sutures.

Are there any potential complications of thread lifts?

Side effects from thread lifts are uncommon.

Mild redness, bruising, swelling, pain and tenderness are expected at the sites of the threads, however, these are usually only mild and subside over a few days. Pain and tenderness are controlled with simple oral medication (paracetamol, ibuprofen or similar).

There can be some initial puckering of the skin, but this usually resolves spontaneously over a few days to a week.

Infection is uncommon but is the main complication. If you experience significant pain, tenderness, redness or swelling after the procedure we will assess you and you may require oral antibiotics.

Threads should not be used in case of: Autoimmune diseases, pregnancy and breast feeding, known allergies to foreign bodies or implants, active infection.

How much does a thread lift cost?

The cost of thread lifts varies depending on the brand and number of threads used. The minimum cost is $2000. Dr Hugo will give you an accurate quote at the time of consultation.
