How To Care For Your Lips After Fillers

Our clients love their new lip fillers, but they are often concerned about how to care for them after the procedure. It’s important to make sure they are properly taken care of to ensure the best results and ensure the longest possible life of the fillers. In this article, we will address some of the common questions and concerns we get from our clients as well as our top tips on aftercare for your lip fillers.

Our List Of Do’s And Don’ts After Dermal Filler For Lips

Do the following after lip fillers:

  • Be gentle with your lips and the skin around your lips for at least 24 hours
  • Wash the skin around your lips very gently for the first couple of days
  • Enjoy foods that are easy to eat without requiring any lip strain
  • Use lipstick and lip liner (gently) to cover any bruising

Don’t do the following after lip fillers:

  • Don’t exfoliate or use any harsh brushes on the lips for at least 24 hours
  • Don’t drink through a straw for the first 24 hours as it can put pressure on your lips
  • Don’t do any strenuous activities including exercise for at least 24 hours
  • Don’t have any type of facial massage for 14 days
  • Don’t have routine dental work carried out until 4 weeks after

Lip Filler Swelling Strategies And Pain Remedies

Swelling straight after your lip filler treatment is normal and expected. This is the time when the swelling is at its most extreme. The top lip will usually be bigger than the bottom lip and project further than the bottom lip, however this will reduce over time. Some slight discomfort and tenderness is also normal during this time.

The swelling may continue at this level for the next 48 – 72 hours before it begins to reduce. You will find that it is more comfortable to talk and eat after 72 hours. The lips may still be tender to touch.

We recommend the following strategies to help with the swelling and discomfort:

  • For the first couple of days eat foods which are easy to eat and chew, including foods which are not messy to eat requiring you to wipe the lips
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Use an icepack on your lips to help with the swelling, however avoid any icepacks with hard edges which could scrape the lips
  • Take Panadol for the first few days to help with the lip tenderness
  • Avoid salt as this can dehydrate your body
  • Taking antihistamines like Zyrtec or Phenergan can help reduce the swelling

Can Lip Filler Damage My Lips?

When lips are filled using the correct technique by a qualified therapist, lip fillers do not damage lips. The filler used in lip injections is a natural component of the tissue. The filler will gradually become absorbed by the body over time and the lips will return to their previous size and shape.

Can Lip Fillers Shrink My Lips?

Over time the lip fillers will become absorbed by the body and the lips will revert back to their previous size. This can sometimes give the illusion of lips which are shrinking but they won’t shrink to a size smaller than they were before the treatment.
